A Rose by Any Other Name…

“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” (William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet)

Why choose a new name for your “secret” identity? Two reasons: one, it’s fun; and two, it’s like being an undercover agent in my own life.

If you are anything at all like I am, you identify with your current self so strongly that it is almost impossible to imagine being who you truly want to be. So I decided to create an alter-ego, someone who does the stuff I only dream of doing. Who not only knows the right thing to say, but also when to say nothing at all. Dangereuse is the me that I know I am instead of the real artificial creation that Amy has become. She is me as I want me to be.

“Monroe is not best understood as only an image, or as an ‘artificial creation of a woman.’ … Something that is not natural can still be real: It has been made. One of the questions the stories about Marilyn’s life beg, therefore, is how much any of us is natural, whether any identity is not made.” (Sarah Churchwell, The Many Lives of Marilyn Monroe)
