Survive or Thrive, Part 4: “I DESIRE That!”

To survive or to thrive… that is the question. As long as you are concentrating on survival, you will be unable to truly thrive. And a Femme Fatale THRIVES.

This is the fourth and final article about moving from survive thinking to thrive thinking. Getting out of survival mode and into thrival (I just made up a word!) mode.

Need → Require → Want → Desire

Survive →→→→→→→→→Thrive

Today’s topic: Desire

To quote from the book The Desire Map: “What you buy, what you eat, what you say, who you chooses to hang with, the things you make, the people you give your love to, what you wear, what you listen to, what you bring into your home, what you end, begin, and dream of… all go back to the desire to feel good.”

All the stuff you want to be, to do, to have… all the wants are driven by a desire to feel a certain way. And basing your decisions on the why (desire) under the what (want) gets you two things:

  1. You don’t get distracted by passing fancies. Wanting a thing isn’t good enough – unless that want lines up with how you want your life to be. It’s investing in a few quality pieces of clothing that look amazing on you and last a long time instead of having a closet overflowing with a bunch of stuff that looked cute on the hanger and was inexpensive, but doesn’t fit well or suit you. It’s eating food that you genuinely enjoy and that make you feel good instead of stuffing yourself with processed “food” products that taste ok and leave you feeling sluggish. It’s getting to the core of you – who you truly are and what makes you happy.
  2. You start to realize that you don’t need to wait to feel the way you want to feel. Instead of needing a certain thing to feel good, you can use the things you already have. When you realize that you are chasing things in order to feel a certain way, you can step back and question whether the thing is necessary to the feeling. You can feel successful without status symbols.
