I want to be pretty

It’s strange, the things I remember sometimes. Today, I was thinking about what I wanted to be when I grew up. And the only thing I can really remember thinking was that I wanted to be pretty. I also think that that was probably the one answer that I never gave when asked. I guess I always knew that wasn’t an acceptable answer. Here’s the question I never thought to ask: what’s wrong with a little girl wanting to be pretty? And the answer that I never heard: Nothing. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be pretty.

I can be pretty and so many other things at the same time. I can be pretty and smart. Pretty and ambitious. Pretty and daring. Pretty and adventurous. Pretty and accomplished. Pretty and successful. Pretty and nice. Pretty and down-to-earth. Pretty and ravishing. Pretty and independent. Pretty AND beautiful.

You get the idea. To me, being pretty is important. Whether it’s supposed to be important or not. I WANT TO BE PRETTY. I WANT TO BE SEEN AS PRETTY. I CAN BE PRETTY AND EVERYTHING ELSE I DESIRE.

  1. I get what you mean. It’s hard perceiving your version of beauty. And thing is you’re probably a beautiful person inside and out. You’ve just let society’s view of pretty and beautiful dictate what you look like my sweet.
